Loctician / Natural Hair Stylist at The Loc District
About the RoleThe Loc District is hiring an experienced loctician or natural hair stylist to join our specialty loc salon in Rhode Island.
We're looking for someone who is confident behind the chair, dependable, professional with clients, coachable, and interested in continuing to grow their skills.
This is an hourly employee position with salon-generated clientele, structured scheduling, paid time off, sick time, opportunities for advanced training, and 100% of tips paid directly to the stylist.
What We're Looking For
- Experience working with locs and natural hair
- Strong shampooing and scalp-care skills
- Confident comb retwist technique
- Loc styling experience
- Starter loc experience
- Familiarity with interlocking and other loc-maintenance techniques
- Ability to complete a standard retwist within approximately 2.5 hours while maintaining quality
- Ability to complete approximately 3–5 retwist clients during a full shift, depending on loc count, length, styling, and service complexity
- Strong attention to clean parting, healthy hair practices, and finished results
- Professional, dependable, and comfortable working with a diverse clientele
- Coachable and open to learning The Loc District's service standards and techniques
- Able to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative salon environment
- Interested in continuing education and expanding into advanced loc services
Experience with crochet maintenance, microlocs, loc extensions, repairs, instant locs, color, and other advanced services is a plus, but not required for every candidate.
What You'll Do
- Perform retwists, loc styling, starter locs, interlocking, treatments, and other services within your demonstrated skill level
- Shampoo and properly prepare clients for loc services
- Deliver services within salon timing and quality standards
- Educate clients on maintenance, healthy loc practices, and appropriate home care
- Build strong professional relationships with new and returning clients
- Maintain accurate client notes and communicate relevant information to the front desk and salon leadership
- Keep your station, tools, and shared salon spaces clean and sanitary
- Properly sanitize tools and follow salon sanitation standards
- Complete assigned opening, closing, laundry, and salon-support responsibilities
- Assist teammates when appropriate to help maintain salon flow and minimize unnecessary client wait times
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, check-ins, and performance reviews
- Participate in occasional photo and video content with the salon's social media team
- Communicate client concerns, service issues, or other situations requiring management attention
- Maintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and professional presentation

Compensation
Base pay starts at $21/hour. Stylists keep 100% of their tips. Higher hourly rates apply when performing approved advanced services based on demonstrated skill level and service proficiency.
Advanced Service Rates- Level B: $25/hour
- Level C: $30/hour
- Level D: $35/hour
- Level E: $40/hour
- Level F: $50/hour
Advanced rates apply only while performing services assigned to those levels and after the stylist has been trained and approved to perform them independently.
Advanced services may include microloc reties, instant locs, loc reattachments, loc extensions, coloring services, and full microloc installations.
