This issue is about making sure the right people find you. Because here's what nobody tells you coming out of school: your skills might be incredible, but if your Instagram looks like a finsta with three posts... hiring managers are moving on. Not because you're not talented, but because they can't tell.
We’re here to fix that. Let's get into it.
4 things your Instagram portfolio must have
(And no, a lot of followers isn't one of them.)
1. A bio that tells them exactly who and where you are. "Hair ✂️✨" is not a bio. Are you a cosmetology student, a custom nail artist, a curly hair specialist? Say it. Something like “Licensed Esthetician with a Focus on Results 🫧| Healing Facials • Chemical Peels • Custom Homecare | Brooklyn-Based” gives them perspective on what makes you special immediately.
2. Stories and highlights that show your personality. The work gets them interested. The vibe gets them excited to meet you. Use your highlights to show what you're into: the education classes you're attending, inspo you're obsessing over, a behind-the-chair moment that turned out better than you expected. They want to know who you are before they bring you in.
3. Before-and-after shots. You know what stops the scroll? A side-by-side pic where you can see the transformation. Everyone loves these. Show us the process: the foil placement, the skin journey, whatever you’re working with. Hiring managers have seen thousands of gorgeous finished looks, but what impresses them is seeing you get there.
4. Consistency over perfection. Your feed doesn't need to look like a celebrity stylist's. It needs to look like it belongs to someone who shows up. You don’t need to take new pictures every week – you can reuse old content in new ways, like a season recap, a mood board, or even just some personality pics. Post regularly, even just once or twice a week. A photo of a haircut you're proud of with a caption like "finally nailed this disconnected layer" shows growth, self-awareness, and genuine love for the craft. That's what gets you hired.
