The Blowout: Vol. 1

👋  Hey, you

Welcome to The Blowout. Think of this as your bi-weekly text from your bestie who's been in the industry forever, knows exactly what's out there, and wants to see you win.

Job tips, industry tea, what's new on SalonJobs, and a handful of gigs that are worth your time.

If you're reading this, you're either searching for the right salon, thinking about it, or just keeping your options open (no judgment… that's literally what window shopping is for.) Either way, you're in the right place.

Let's get into it.

5 green flags in a job listing that actually mean something

We've all scrolled past a listing that felt right but couldn't explain why. Here's your cheat sheet for what to look for in a job description:

1. They talk about education,  unprompted. It's right there at the top, not buried in the fine print or dressed up as corporate-speak. A salon that invests in their people isn't shy about saying so.

2. The compensation is clearly stated. A salon that's confident in what they pay doesn't make you guess. The number's right there. 3. They describe their culture in a way that feels specific,  not copy-pasted. "We're a family" is written in every listing ever. But "we do monthly color trainings and close on Sundays so our team can rest"? That's a salon that's thought about it. Specificity is a green flag every time.

4. The listing mentions a structured to getting promoted . This means someone there has done the work of thinking about your future. That's not common, so whenyou see it, take note!

5. They tell you what makes them different, and it's believable. Awards, benefits, tenure of their team, the way they describe their clients. If you finish reading and think "okay, I actually want to know more"… that's your gut talking. Listen to it.

We're In New York City, baby

It's official, SalonJobs has launched in New York City.

If you're in the five boroughs (or thinking about making the move, bold, and we respect it!), we now have salons actively looking for people like you right here on the platform. Now, you can get a better feel for what you’re applying to before you hit submit.

More cities are coming. But, if you're in NYC (or know someone who is), now's the time.

Resume builder (it does more than you think!)

Your Instagram portfolio is great, but it's not a resume. And when a salon owner is deciding whether or not to call you in, they want both.

Here's the thing about most resume tools: they were built for accountants. Blank fields, generic prompts, a format that has never once in its life thought about a before-and-after photo.

Our Resume Builder actually gets it. Answer a few guided questions, five minutes tops, and you've got something real: a resume with your photo, your training, your skills, and it all looks like you put serious time into it (even if you didn't 😉).

Once you build you resume, it’ll live on your profile, and be attached to every application you submit on SalonJobs. You can also download it to use anywhere else you want. Pretty sweet!

Before you go…

The industry's moving. Salons are getting smarter about how they hire, and applicants are getting smarter about where they apply. You're already ahead just by being here.
