A job seeker recently wrote me asking some very pointed questions about finding a job:
...because I do not have exp[erience] NO one will hire me. I have kept my lic[ense] current and I do trades with a friend of mine who is an esthetician so I keep up my facial massage skills and micro-dermabrasion. I need to be brought up to speed with products. This is something I have always wanted to do! Yet if you dont have exp no one wants you!...So I responded:
Dear Seeker,
An employer's desire to hire is based on his belief that your presence will benefit his business. That belief is based only partly on your experience and partly on other factors such as how much you believe in yourself. If you want to convince employers to hire you, focus on what you have to offer instead of what you don't have. You have a current license. You are actively performing services. (Does it matter that you're trading services with friends?) The bottom line is--if you don't believe you're qualified, how can you expect employers to be convinced?
Your need to get product education is not an asset in an interview, but your eagerness to learn about new products IS. So, there's a positive spin on everything you have told me. Modify your thinking just a little bit and it will change employers' perception of you a lot. You have diverse skills and all of your training and experience illustrates you have skills employers can use to build their business. If you're competent in your field(s) then you are in demand. Salons are always hiring!
Success is the meeting of preparation with opportunity. You have prepared and the opportunities are present. Your next step is to build the faith and courage you need to make your dream happen. Focus on your value and potential. Try to look at yourself from the eyes of an employer and ask yourself "why should I hire you?" Practice answering that question until you feel that you mean what you're saying and the only possible response to the answer you give is "when can you start?"
The power is in you! Nurture it and let it flow through you. Positive thoughts give you continual forward momentum and strength. You have the skills. You are worthy. You are qualified. Go get it!
Sincerely,
Jason Rice
